We also have instructors working with students in reading, math and English conversation in small group classes within the community. We offer math classes at Rochester Educational Opportunity Center (REOC) for REOC students trying to increase their test scores so they may enter High School Equivalency diploma classes or other training programs such as Licensed Practical Nurse, Security Guard, Medical Secretary and Pharmacy Technician. At Action for a Better Community (ABC) we provide reading classes twice a week for their students who are going for their High School Equivalency diploma. Our newest offsite classroom experience is at St. Ann’s Community where we hold English Speaking classes for employees of St. Ann’s Community who wish to improve their English-speaking skills.
In 2018 we received a grant from Spectrum to create a Learning Center here at Literacy Rochester. Our learning center has 19 laptop computers, Smart TV, white boards and Broadband Internet. We have 6 tables and 5 study carrels in the room. We currently use the learning center for our math, reading and conversation classes as well as our Volunteer information sessions. Our goal is to offer computer classes to volunteers and students soon.
To operate our instructional programs, we have over 140 volunteers who offer their time and expertise in our library, special projects, classroom teachers and assistants, one-to-one tutors, Volunteer information session presenters, tutor trainers, and intake/assessment facilitators. Without all our wonderful volunteers we would not be able to provide all the instructional services that we continue to provide.
