Continue reading for a deep dive into Matthew’s volunteer experience and even how he was able to help a community member find a new apartment!
Matthew came across the Digital Literacy program in his search for volunteer opportunities. The search started when Matthew decided it was the right time to give back to the community and be available to support others with their tech questions. Having prior experience with technology, Matthew felt that becoming a Digital Literacy volunteer was the perfect way to, “leverage my experience into direct help for people.”
Since beginning his new volunteer journey, Matthew has been able to help countless individuals. All of whom step foot in the library to improve their digital skills regardless of background or motivation. One individual included a gentleman searching for a new apartment. Matthew worked with this customer over many months to aid in his search for a suitable apartment.
“I had no idea of the patience and tolerance level needed for simply renting a place these days.”
Matthew began the search by simply asking the gentleman questions to better understand his circumstances and apartment criteria. Then, a project plan was formed which included sending out applications, calling contacts, and more. The process took some time, and Matthew could sense that the customer was beginning to get discouraged. However, Matthew was there to be an encouraging voice and offered reassurance. At that point, the plan was revised and Matthew advised speaking directly to property managers to increase chances of finding an open place. The customer was hesitant about the new plan but within two months he made new connections and gained a deeper understanding of how the process works. Matthew shared that the customer recently secured an apartment that fits his most important needs in a nice neighborhood.
“That experience is memorable not only due to the technology but, maybe more importantly, he was able to reframe his perspective towards a successful outcome.”
For Matthew’s case, volunteering not only means helping an individual one time, but building a connection over multiple visits to better the customer’s life. Matthew also shared that a key characteristic to being a successful volunteer is being empathic. He hopes to remind the community that the Digital Literacy volunteers are here to help and listen.
Outside of volunteering, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family, being on the golf course, or attending a baseball game. You can visit Matthew at Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am to 1pm. View all Sites and Schedules for the most current locations and times.
