On Wednesday, September 16, we held our Celebration of Literacy. We brought together our students, volunteers, board members, and community supporters for an evening of appreciation and to reflect on the progress our students have made. We honored both the power of literacy and the people who make our mission possible.
The evening was filled with laughter, reflection, and appreciation. Thank you to all who joined us!

President’s Award: Cathy Pospula
The President’s award is presented each year to an individual who has made a lasting impact on our organization and the community that we serve.
Friend of Literacy Award: Meghan Palumbo
This award is presented to an individual who has supported Literacy Rochester and is a genuine friend for the advocacy of adult literacy.
Going to Bat for Literacy Award: Henrietta Public Library & Griffin Van Ostrand
This award recognizes individuals or organizations who have “stepped up to the plate” for adult literacy advocacy and supports our students as they work towards their own literacy “homeruns.” This award celebrates those who truly believe in our students potential and stand behind not only their victory laps, but also their “strikeouts” and challenges along the way.
Judy Dauphinee Volunteer of the Year Award: Gregg Vandivert
This award recognizes a Literacy Rochester volunteer who exemplifies selflessness, dependability, and a positive team spirit. It also goes to someone who follows through on commitments and willingly goes beyond the job description. All these characteristics were typical of Judy Dauphinee, a valued tutor, and volunteer who passed away in 1991.
Ruth J. Colvin Founder’s Award: Jennifer Eaton
This award was introduced in 2014 to commemorate our 50th anniversary and is presented to individuals who have played a major part in the advancement and success of Literacy Rochester throughout its history. This award is named after Ruth Colvin who founded Literacy Volunteers of America in 1962.
