In our ever-expanding Digital Literacy program, one of our newest additions to our free tech help site locations is the Fairport Public Library (FPL). We recently had the opportunity to chat with Lauren, Assistant Director of Technology, to talk about the revamped partnership!
The partnership officially resumed this past March and brought renewed energy and digital literacy support to Fairport patrons. Tech volunteers originally started at FPL in 2019, but programs were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. After some discussions, the Digital Literacy program and volunteer have a home again at the library!
The library offers a wide variety of programs such as yoga classes, safe driving courses, and of course tech assistance. As technology becomes more integrated into daily life, the demand for support continues to grow. For Lauren, the collaboration fits naturally within the library’s broader mission. “We’re more than just books,” she shared. “We’re really a community support for the people here.”
FPL has long been recognized as one of the most technology-driven libraries in Monroe County. Unlike traditional tech support environments, the library and Digital Literacy volunteers emphasize patience and personal connection. “Volunteers actually sit down with patrons, get hands-on experience, and build a connection with someone,” Lauren explained. This approach makes all the difference for patrons who may feel overwhelmed or intimidated by technology.
Navigating an Increasingly Complex Digital World
While some patrons need help learning basic computer skills, others struggle with rapidly evolving technologies. For instance, concepts including two-factor authentication, facial recognition, and cybersecurity awareness are among the top questions asked from patrons. Moreover, there is an overwhelming shift to incorporate technology into necessary and routine activities. Lauren pointed to filing taxes, REAL ID applications, and other government tasks as examples of how rapidly society is shifting online.
“Our society is changing, but people are being left behind with no formal support systems,” she said.
At the same time though, curiosity about emerging technologies is growing. Lauren noted that many patrons actively ask questions about artificial intelligence and how these new tools may affect their lives. The library sees these challenges not only as obstacles, but as opportunities to expand community learning and support.
Libraries as Modern Community Spaces
The return of in-person programming after the pandemic highlights the important role that libraries play in building connections. Lauren believes programs and partnerships are revitalizing library spaces as community hubs for people to gather, learn, and feel supported.
“We’re seeing more people than ever looking for places to go and community connection after being all cooped up during COVID,” she said.
Unlike commercial tech stores where interactions may feel rushed or transactional, volunteers are there on their own time to provide personalized assistance. “Commercial spaces can be frustrating,” Lauren explained. “The volunteers are there because they want to help and don’t mind helping for as long as it takes to resolve the issue.” That level of care creates a more meaningful and memorable experience.
Looking Ahead
Currently, Digital Literacy volunteers provide one-on-one support sessions at the library. View more information on the Fairport Public Library website
- Tuesdays: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Looking ahead, Literacy Rochester and FPL hope to offer tech workshops based on specific community needs and interests. For Lauren, the partnership emphasizes the power of collaboration, lifelong learning, and accessible community support. Her message to the community is simple, “come see us!”
