Searching for jobs nowadays can be stressful for individuals, especially trying to find positions that meet their skillset or simply submitting online applications. For two customers in our Digital Literacy (DL) program though, they received help from volunteers this past fall with their job searches, and both returned to share inspiring news!
Our first customer, Shawna, visited the DL volunteer at Lincoln Branch Library in October after being laid off from Kodak. Shawna stopped by for assistance with updating their resume and submitting job applications online. Most applications today are completed through internal online portals at the company or through job recruitment websites such as LinkedIn or Indeed. After looking around and reviewing Shawna’s skillset, the volunteer suggested looking at LeDestri Foods for open positions. With support from the volunteer, Shawna secured a great position at LiDestri Foods, where their qualifications were an excellent match.
Now, at the Gates Public Library, Sally also found herself in a similar situation where she was seeking employment. Sally needed help with online applications and narrowing down searches for jobs that matched her skillset. Sally was previously employed at Big Lots but lost her job when all stores shut down over the summer. She wasn’t aware that most job applications were now online. So, when visiting the library, she met with a DL volunteer who helped her build her resume and apply to Boscov’s. After some waiting, she eventually found out that she was hired! Sally is extremely grateful for the support and having someone “tech savvy” help guide her through new online procedures.
Shawna and Sally are not the only ones who utilize our DL volunteers for help with job applications and resumes. In our 2024-2025 program year, over 100 community members visited our volunteers for help with a task relating to job searches. These tasks included submitting online applications, learning how to use Microsoft Word to format resumes and cover letters, or refining search options to find jobs that match the individual’s skillset. Our DL volunteers are helping the community one job application at a time!
