Digital Difference: Scott

For Scott, he has always enjoyed technology and how it can be useful in everyday life. However, he found himself constantly learning through trial and error, which often caused frustration and discouragement. So, when Scott discovered that his local library offered free tech help, he signed up for an appointment to see what it was all about.

Scott’s first visited Maryann at the Penfield Public Library this July and knew he wanted to ask questions about cloud storage, how to organize files, and explore Microsoft Excel. He had previously learned about these tech topics a little bit at work before retiring, but now he wanted to learn how he could apply that knowledge to his personal life.

“I enjoy technology and I’m always looking for ways to improve my knowledge using available tools to the extent of their capability.”

Before the appointment, Scott didn’t have high expectations for how a Digital Literacy volunteer could help because many people get frustrated when they’re asked to help. However, he was pleasantly surprised when Maryann was willing to provide assistance and treated every question with care and compassion, “there was no pressure to hurry up, and Maryann was receptive to all my questions. It was really my time to learn.” Furthermore, the ability to meet one-on-one and in a private space really appealed to Scott and eased his nervousness.

Walking out of his first tech appointment, Scott reflected and knew he found the perfect program to help him learn. He plans to make follow-up appointments and prepare some more focused questions ahead of time.
