Meet Sarah, our newest board member and learn a bit about her!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a native Rochesterian, having grown up in Fairport. I went to the University of Scranton for my undergraduate degree and then worked for an educational non-profit in New York City before returning to Rochester for graduate school at Nazareth where I received my Masters in Higher Education. I work in Alumni Relations at the University of Rochester where I manage our Women’s Network and oversee engagement programming for women of the Rochester community.
I live in East Rochester with my husband Eric and our beloved dog, Phil. I love reality television, I enjoy a thrift store and tag sale, I’m a ferocious reader and I’m happy to continue to moonlight at my high school job – the Fairport Public Library! Being an engaged community member is something that has always been important to me. I’m a past president and proud member of the Junior League of Rochester.
How did you hear about Literacy Rochester and what motivated you to become involved on the board?
As my recent board role with the Junior League ended, I felt I had more bandwidth to give to another organization. I’ve been aware of LR through my dear family friend and my brother, who is a past board member. I see reading as freedom and independence. I’m thrilled to have joined the board!
In what ways do you hope being involved with Literacy Rochester will help shape you personally or professionally?
I’m looking forward to getting to know new people. As someone who has lived most of their life in Rochester I find it very refreshing to find make brand new connections. I’m looking forward to learning how another non-profit operates and supports our community. I’m excited to learn more about the direct services we offer through our classes, library, and support programs in libraries throughout the community.
How do you like to spend your free time outside of work and volunteering?
My husband and I love to explore around Rochester and travel when we can. One of our favorite places is the Hudson Valley. He is a brewer by trade so you can find us throughout Rochester and the Finger Lakes trying a new beer. I’m a mediocre tennis player who plateaued years ago but happily continues to play with my sister regularly. I’m lucky that my whole nuclear family once again calls Rochester home.
