LVR offers comprehensive training workshops where you’ll learn a variety of techniques to teach reading, writing, and English speaking and listening skills to adults. Each workshop consists of twenty-one hours of classroom time plus home practice of about seven hours.
These workshops are open to individuals who have attended an Onboarding session. After attending Onboarding, you will be contacted about the next Tutor Training Workshop.
Training workshops include:
- practice and demonstration
- lesson planning
- goal setting
You will also gain insights from your colleagues, LVR staff, and other experienced tutors.
Most workshops train you to tutor both types of students in our program—Adult Basic Education and English for Speakers of Other Languages—so you don’t need to decide up front which interests you more. To become a math tutor you will need to attend a Workplace Skills Workshop. Call 585.473.3030 for more information about Workplace Skills Workshop.
Workshop size is limited and you must be registered to attend. There is a non-refundable registration/materials fee of $40.
During the program year, LVR’s staff and volunteers conduct in-service training sessions and/or conferences on a variety of topics. Past topics have included computer literacy, math, citizenship, assessment tools, use of the library, and financial literacy. Watch our calendar for upcoming opportunities.
