Ahmasa Mohammad is a 48-year-old single parent of an 8-year-old daughter who came from Afghanistan to Rochester in November of 2018. Ahmasa and her daughter arrived having no family support and a very little understanding of English. She was referred to the agency Refugees Helping Refugees (RHR).
The staff, volunteers, and participants of RHR, welcomed Ahmasa and slowly she began to feel a sense of community. In April 2021, while Ahmasa was attending workshops at RHR, she was introduced to Literacy Rochester’s Digital Literacy program which offers on site computer assistance several days a week.
Ahmasa was interested in learning how to be more comfortable with using a computer and navigating the internet. She also wanted to improve her English and feel more confident when speaking with others.
Digital Literacy Volunteer Joe Easterly started working with Ahmasa, helping her to improve her computer skills and gain confidence in navigating online resources. Joe has been a wonderful support to Ahmasa in several ways. He has helped her create an email and research job training programs online. He even helped her to apply for a career training program in the health services field. As a result of his help and her hard work, Ahmasa now has started a full-time training program to earn her Nursing Assistant Certification.
When she is not studying, Ahmasa enjoys swimming, sports, jogging and spending time with her daughter.
Ahmasa has come a long way in a short period of time. She speaks English with more confidence and is a positive role model for her young daughter. She continues to work towards a future in the healthcare field and is determined to make a better life for herself and her daughter.
