One-to-One Tutoring
- Trained tutors provide instruction to adults, 18 and up.
- Assist student(s) with reading and math (below 9th grade reading level) or English as a New Language.
- Students and tutors meet in public places in Monroe County through individualized plans.
- Help a student achieve success at a speed that works for the student.
- Pre-testing is required before a student is match with a tutor
English as a New Language
- Classes offered in-person and virtually to help students learn English language skills.
- English as a New Language (ENL) classes are held at various community libraries around Monroe County including Henrietta Public Library, Pittsford Community Library, etc.
- Classes are mixed groups of beginner to advanced English language learners.
- Instruction includes grammar lessons, current topics, reading news articles and short stories, and natural conversation in class.
- Contact the Literacy Rochester office in advance to register for this class.
2022-2023 Program Year Highlights
Group Programs
English Conversation Groups
- Weekly gathering of 5 to 10 students with tutors to practice English-speaking skills. All adults looking to practice their English-speaking skills are welcome.
- These groups provide an opportunity for ENL students to improve their speaking confidence and meet other adults who are learning English.
- Topics of conversation include American culture, idioms, daily life situations, and casual spoken English.
Family Literacy
- Provides small groups of parents or caregivers and their children, ages 3-11, with the tools to promote and support basic literacy.
- These training sessions are sponsored by Greece Community Education and offered three times per year by LR staff and volunteers.
