The role of the Board of Directors is to ensure the following:
– Ensure adequate resources and effective management of programs. Provide fiduciary oversight of the organization’s affairs, including adoption of the annual budget and maintenance of appropriate fiscal controls.
– Work in partnership with the Executive Director and development staff to raise funds from the community, while also enhancing the organization’s public standing by clearly articulating the organization’s mission, accomplishments, and goals.
– Provide input to the Board President to support and assess the performance of the Executive Director and ensure succession planning for the position.
– Ensure adherence to legal standards and ethical norms, establishing pertinent policies and procedures (e.g., personnel policies, grievance procedures) and adhering to provisions of the organization’s bylaws and articles of incorporation.
– Ensure compliance with regulations affecting nonprofit organizations and sound risk-management practices.
– Recruit and orient new board members
– Assess board performance.

Expectations of Literacy Rochester Board Members includes the following:
– Have or develop a passion for the mission of the organization.
– Make an annual financial gift ($500.00), and contribute financially to fundraising events.
– Attend at least 4 board meetings per year
– Time commitment of between 10 to 20 hours per month
– Serve on, at a minimum, one Board Committee as a chair or member.
– Participate in Brain Games, and two additional fundraising activities
– Utilize your professional skills in ways that can advance the organization.
– Recruit prospective board members (present 1 candidate annually)
