In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “An investment in knowledge pays the most interest.” Truer words cannot be spoken. Through knowledge, ideas are formed, harnessed, and put into action to benefit our lives and the greater good. The opportunity to help people gain knowledge and achieve success is what initially led me to Literacy Rochester, and my experiences there with the staff and volunteers is what keeps me coming back.
One of the greatest gifts we are given in the modern world is the ability to look deeply into a topic, researching multiple perspectives, and developing sound opinions and beliefs based on that knowledge. The opportunities that are at the fingertips of so many are only valuable if a person can truly grasp and reason with the information they access; this is where Literacy Rochester has the ability to make a significant impact. The outreach they provide is a steppingstone which can lead so many people on the journey to claim their future.
As a student of history, understanding culture and perspective has always been at the forefront of my education. Literacy Rochester allows a platform for people from all walks of
life, all backgrounds, to come together and develop skills and strategies that benefit far more people than the individual alone. This “coming-together” of perspective, understanding, and focus leads to a community who’s knowledge has the power to impact generations.
I am humbled by my opportunity through Literacy Rochester to empower those we serve to create a life they love filled with new understanding and ability. It is my pleasure to allow my own children, Nathaniel (3) and Kenleigh (7), to see the joy that comes with continued learning, determination, and progress through my work with Literacy Rochester.
