Student Spotlight: Shayka Lopez

OACES student Shayka Lopez

Shayka Lopez, a stay-at-home mom of three girls, dropped out of high school at a young age. Years later, she was thinking about how she needed to make a change. After months of repeatedly seeing billboards as well as the occasional TV commercial advertising the Office of Adult and Career Education Services (OACES), she decided to try it. “I came to OACES for my family so we could have a better life and move forward ‘cause I didn’t have a GED or nothing so I had to get it,” she said.

“I came and I loved it.” It’s hard for Shayka to contain her enthusiasm. “I appreciate OACES and my teachers are awesome! If school was like that back then, I’d have been going to school every day,” she says energetically.

She recently graduated from the culinary program.

Congratulations Shayka!  Don’t forget that Digital Literacy volunteers are available to assist with computer related tasks that can keep you moving forward; tasks such as filling out online applications and writing a resume. Trained volunteers are available to help at one of our community locations.

Digital Literacy, a program of Literacy Rochester, helps adults become fully engaged in their community as citizens, parents, consumers, and workers. The Digital Literacy program is provided free of charge on a one-to-one, drop-in basis in partnership with OACES at a variety of locations in and around Rochester.
