Volunteer Spotlight: Dave

Dave first volunteered with Literacy Rochester in 2019. In the past three years, he has tutored four students in reading and English language, including natives of China, Korea, and Ecuador.

A key to working with students, Dave says, is to find ways to engage them at their level. Rather than workbooks, one of Dave’s students, a young woman from Henrietta, benefitted from young adult novels. With a background in educational publishing, Dave is pleased with the many teaching materials offered by the Literacy Rochester library, as well as resources offered by the public libraries in Henrietta, Brighton, and Irondequoit where he has met with his students.

During the pandemic, Dave and his student switched to Zoom meetings in order to continue working together.

In addition to his one-on-one tutoring, Dave also teaches an English language class every week at Irondequoit Public Library. On August 7, 2022, Dave represented our tutors on Connections with Evan Dawson on WXXI.
